Books That Build a Bigger World — One Bedtime at a Time

A bedtime reading series for parents who read aloud what they actually want to read.

In our house, story time looks a little different.

Every night, after the day winds down and the lights get low, I read a chapter or two aloud. Not from a board book or early reader, but from a book I actually want to read. A memoir. An essay collection. A novel meant for adults, that’s still gentle, thoughtful, and rich with story.

My kids listen. They don’t always understand every word, but they’re soaking it all in. The language, the rhythm, the possibilities. And one day, when they’re grown, maybe the memory of these stories will help them believe a little more boldly in the lives they can build for themselves.

This is what our bedtime routine is built on: stories that stretch our imaginations, calm our minds, and quietly expand what feels possible.

What This Series Is

Books That Build a Bigger World is a growing collection of book reviews and reflections, all focused on one specific tradition:
Reading adult books aloud to kids at bedtime.

It’s not about skipping children’s books altogether. It’s about creating space for something else, too. A cozy moment where parents can read what they want, and their kids get to come along for the ride.

Each book I feature here has been:

  • Read aloud by me at bedtime,
  • Gentle enough for young listeners,
  • Rich enough for adult attention,

And meaningful enough to leave an impression.

Why It Matters

While the routine has made bedtime easier both at home and when we’re traveling, reading aloud at night is not just a way to end the day.

These aren’t just stories. They’re seeds. They’re slow-building messages that say:

You can go anywhere. You can become anything. You don’t have to live small.

Let’s build that bigger world—one bedtime at a time.
